Classic Death Cab albums reissued on vinyl + ‘You Can Play These Songs With Chords’ Reissued on cassette!

Death Cab for Cutie has announced the vinyl reissue of their first three studio albums, Something About Airplanes (1998), We Have The Facts And We’re Voting Yes (2000) and The Photo Album (2001) as well as the cassette reissue of DCfC’s debut You Can Play These Song With Chords all via Barsuk Records.

In celebration, Death Cab for Cutie is offering a $5 discount to fans who buy one of the album inspired t-shirts with their vinyl. Get yours here.

These albums have largely been out of print on vinyl since their original pressing (with the exception of a limited-edition box set released by Artists in Residence), and this reissue marks the first time they’re available separately on high-quality 180 gram vinyl. Each LP includes an MP3 download code and is presented with its original artwork.

The reissue of Death Cab for Cutie’s debut, You Can Play These Songs With Chords, returns the album to its original format – cassette. Originally released in 1997 by Bellingham, WA’s Elsinor Records with two different j-card cover art versions, Chords was previously made available by Barsuk on CD with new artwork in 2002 along with extra bonus material as You Can Play These Songs With Chords + 10, but this release marks its first cassette availability in many years. This reissue includes an MP3 download code and artwork replicated from both versions of the original cassette release, along with new liner notes from Elsinor’s Joe Chilcote. More information here.

These reissues will be available at indie retail stores and other outlets in early December.

Death Cab announce the departure of Chris Walla

“We’ve had an incredible 17 years of making music with Chris. We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished together, including our 8th studio album which we have just put the finishing touches on. We will miss Chris and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career. We are excited about sharing new music, and seeing all of you very soon.”
- Ben, Nick and Jason

Chris will be joining the band on the remainder of the summer festival shows through the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC over the weekend of September 11-14. The new, yet-to-be-titled Death Cab album was recorded with producer Rich Costey and is slated for release in early 2015.

“I will miss being a quarter of this band, and will support whatever course Death Cab for Cutie chooses from here. I am profoundly grateful to Ben, Nick, and Jason, for the experiences that define my adult life. Truly grateful, beyond words. Thank you.

I am also grateful to, and deeply humbled by, all of our fans. Without you, music would be mere ‘content’ and nothing could possibly be sadder than that. Thank you all, so dearly.”

Chris’ full statement can be read here.
