04.23.08 TRANSMISSION 3: DEMOCRATS

by Chris

Torquil's father's spoken introduction to the Stars record may say it best:  "When there is nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire."  I, for one, can feel the flames at my feet.

04.05.08 TRANSMISSION 2: RE: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: RE: YOUR NEW ALBUM

by Chris

We've been hearing lots of feedback about Narrow Stairs, most of it really positive.  But it comes to us through the weirdest filters  -  forwarded on from the assistants of the heads of the most important web outlets in all of Lower [insert name of region here], through management, and in context with a bunch of stuff we don't need to read.  So by the time it gets cut and we see it, it goes something like:

DCFC record is AWESOME, can't wait till they're here

This is, of course, fantastic news; we're enormously proud of this album.  As in the previous post, though, I can't wait for you to stop hearing about it, and start hearing it.  Only 13 days now until the first show, at which point we will BURN BREMERTON TO THE GROUND.

Umm, not really.  But rehearsals are sounding great and I think it'll be a good show.  Ben's got an amazing new amp that our resident guitar genius Jesse Quitslund built.

Be safe.

03.27.08 TRANSMISSION 1: DETAILS

by Chris

Details.  Horns; red skin; pointy pitchfork; a goatee only Dave Navarro could love.  'Narrow Stairs' is done, and somehow, not done:  There are more 'i's to dot than in an Apple ad; more talking than listening; more doing than thinking.  Stamping and signing off on details...  Soulja Boy asked, and they threw some Ds on it.  D-tails.  Retail details are my favorite, if only for the rhyme.

Really, though, what I'm looking forward to is music.  I hear it's great.  I want to be on a stage and crank up an amp to the point that makes Will freak out behind the console (that's louder than Mom would allow, just for reference).  There's little detail to be had in such a situation.  It's rock music, and if that's complicated, then something's wrong.

Back to Youth Group mixes.  More soon, with greater frequency, amplitude and soul.

You Weren’t Using Your Head

by Ben

hey ya’ll,

sorry i’ve been slacking on the posts over the last month and a half. i’d like to claim it’s because i’ve been busy, but the reality is that the sun recently made its annual appearance here in the northwest and i’ve been blowing off almost all my responsibilities. woopsy…

the early to mid 60’s were a golden age for music here in the pacific northwest. while the Kingsmen, The Wailers and The Sonics are certainly our most widely recognized exports, they don’t begin to represent the sheer volume of great music being made during that period.

this is one my favs from that era, performed by Rocky and His Friends and recorded by legendary northwest producer Kearney Barton. if you enjoy this track, should pick up any of the ‘Northwest Killers” comps on Norton Records and get yer NW garage on!

Enjoy!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the BEACH.

What are the experts going to prove next? At this rate, I'm never leaving the house. I'm waiting for the next headline: "Breathing Is More Dangerous Than Not Breathing, Experts Warn."

In what has to be my favorite news item to date, DRAG MAULING, the reporter notes "Investigators were trying to determine what caused the street rod dragster to go into the crowd at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, about 80 miles east of Memphis."

I may not be an "investigator" but I am gonna go out a on limb here and ask the obvious: "What IS a fucking street rod dragster even DOING at a Cars for KIDS charity event in the first place?!?"

Sheesh.

Enough about cars, let's talk about THIS BAD NINJA. Looks like it's back to NINJA SCHOOL for this one.

And now Ladies and Gentlemen,

I give you: DEAD. BABY. COUNTDOWN.

Seriously, why are they reporting this like a sporting event?

I am feeling down today. A real glass is half empty kind of day. Maybe tomorrow will be brighter.

And since this blog was started with the bee theme, it seems appropriate to report that thirteen year old Evan O'Dorney has won the National Spelling Bee. Check out the big brain on Evan! The winning word this year was serrefine.
